Emerald, May’s Birthstone of Renewal

The deep green birthstone of May, has been coveted since its discovery. Said to give the wearer more intelligence and quick-wittedness it also is said to evoke renewal and rebirth. With the month of May ushering in spring, no wonder Emerald is the perfect birthstone.

Emerald is known for it’s vivid green hue and was heavily favored by Cleopatra herself, for bringing love and abundance to the wearer. It has been told that Emerald is the stone of Venus, goddess of Love, Truth, and Beauty. Unlike diamonds, which have their own grading system, natural emeralds are considered one of the top precious stones with an ancient pedigree and are valued in a distinctly different way. The first known emerald mines were in Egypt. The stone was heavily favored by Cleopatra herself, because of the stones reputation for bringing love and abundance to the wearer. She adorned a lot of her royal jewelry with emeralds for this reason!

Around the sixteenth-century when Spanish explorers invaded the Americas, the Incas had already been using emeralds in their religious ceremonies for hundreds of years! The Spaniards, who favored gold to precious gems, traded their emeralds for gold.

Emerald is the most famous member of the beryl family. Legends endowed the wearer with the ability to foresee the future when emerald was placed under the tongue, as well as to reveal truth and be protected against evil spells. Emerald was once also believed to cure diseases like cholera and malaria. Wearing an emerald was believed to reveal the truth or falseness of a lover’s oath as well as make one an eloquent speaker. MILAMORE’s Emeralds

George Inaki Root, Milamore’s head designer, loves using emeralds in our pieces to give them dimension and color. Although we have Emerald Birthstone pieces, we also use emerald across a wide array of our products. For instance, the Snake Ring is adorned with emeralds in the eyes similar to how the ancient Egyptians adorned their jewelry.
